The Malaysian government announced that sugar supply in domestic market will be increased by another 10% from 1 July 2010 up to Hari Raya Puasa in September 2010. Sugar supply was increased by 5% last month (May 2010). (The Star 30 June 2010).
Accordingly, the 15% increase in sugar production from 100,000 metric tonnes to 115,000 metric tonnes per month would be adequate to meet demand until Hari Raya.
What do all these figures indicate?
First, instead of taking less sugar/food before and during fasting month, Malaysians in general are taking more sugar. This is not a good health indicator.
1 month = 115,000 metric tonnes of sugar = 115,000,000 kilogram of sugar
Malaysian population = 27,000,000
Estimated foreign workers in Malaysia = 3,000,000
Total residents in Malaysia = 30,000,000
115,000,000 kg of sugar/30,000,000 residents
It means that each person is taking 3.8 kg of sugar each month. 3.8 kg = 3,800 gram.
It means about 123 gram of sugar per resident per day.
World Health Organisation and Malaysian Diet Guide recommendation: consume not more than 50 gram of sugar each day (The Sun, 22 March 2010)
White sugar is related to diabetes.
Take care while taking sugar.

Diary 105: Passed urine test after a week’s health food
In my earlier diary, I shared with you a case of my young friend who did not pass the first urine test to qualify for his new well-paid job.
After discussing over the phone, he decided to consume only vegetables and fruits for a week with the hope that he will pass the test in the followng week.
What was the result?
He passed the urine test.
The vegetables and fruits were able to reduce his body’s acidity to an acceptable level required by the company management.
Amazing?
That is the wonder of health food.
If you are willing to change your diet, your body will also help you in reclaiming health.

Diary 104: Probiotics and the Gut
This article entitled “Probiotics and the gut” was written by Dr Tan Huck Joo in the The Star, 20 June 2010. The following information provided is useful reference for all of us.
Probiotics are living microorganisms, usually present in food and beverages, can contribute to a healthy digestive system.
They are live, beneficial bacteria that will impart health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts.
Its general role in human health is to keep the ecosstem in the intestines – the gut microflora – in balance through promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut, so they could keep the potentially harmful ones under control.
Probiotics is a popular health tonic today.
Probiotics supplements are not necessary for normal, healthy individuals.
Among the probiotics-rich food are fermented daily products such as yoghurt and cultured milk drinks.

Diary 103: Talk at Company
In the afternoon of 25 June 2010, I delivered the health talk for staffs of International Software Centre Malaysia (ISCM) based in Petaling Jaya.
Of the total 70 people pre-registered for the talk, roughly 50 turned up.
Most of my talks were organised by government agencies and Chinese NGOs.
It was thoughtful for the management of ISCM in the private sector to invite me to present such a special talk.
Perticipants are interested to know how my family is able to lead a life without medicine.
They wanted to kown how to reduce body weight.
Some expressed that they would take appropriate steps to attain and reclaim good health.
Most interestingly, the management provided healthy bread for the participants. It was a little surprise for me.
It simply shows that the company is concerned about the health of their staffs.
There is everything to gain from doing so.
Wise company.

Diary 102: Chronic Kidney Disease, Diabetes & High Blood Pressure
The two main causes of chronic kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure, which are responsible for up to two-thirds of the cases.
Diabetes happens when your blood sugar is too high, causing damage to many organs in your body, including the kidneys and heart, as well as blood vessels, nerves and eyes.
High blood pressure, or hypertension, occurs when the pressure of your blood against the walls of your blood vessels increases.
If uncontrolled, or poorly controlled, high blood pressure can be a leading cause of heart attacks, strokes and chronic kidney disease. Also, chronic kidney disease can cause high blood pressure.
Other conditions that affect the kidneys are:
• Glomerulonephritis, a group of diseases that cause inflammation and damage to the kidney's filtering units. These disorders are the third most common type of kidney disease.
• Inherited diseases, such as polycystic kidney disease, which causes large cysts to form in the kidneys and damage the surrounding tissue.
• Malformations that occur as a baby develops in its mother's womb. For example, a narrowing may occur that prevents normal outflow of urine and causes urine to flow back up to the kidney. This causes infections and may damage the kidneys.
• Lupus and other diseases that affect the body's immune system.
• Obstructions caused by problems like kidney stones, tumors or an enlarged prostate gland in men.
• Repeated urinary infections.

Diary 101: The Burden of Kidney Failure
The following information is useful to all of us.
Each year in the United States, more than 100,000 people are diagnosed with kidney failure, a serious condition in which the kidneys fail to rid the body of wastes. Kidney failure is the final stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
In US, Diabetes is the most common cause of kidney failure, accounting for nearly 44%of new cases in 2005. The other important cause is high blood pressure (27%).
Even when diabetes is controlled, the disease can lead to CKD and kidney failure. Most people with diabetes do not develop CKD that is severe enough to progress to kidney failure.
Nearly 24 million people in the United States have diabetes, and nearly 180,000 people are living with kidney failure as a result of diabetes.
People with kidney failure undergo either dialysis, an artificial blood-cleaning process, or transplantation to receive a healthy kidney from a donor.

Diary 100: The Wonder of Alternative Treatments
This relative was facing a unique illness related to his nervous system. His head was slanted, eyes blinking and one of his hand occassionally shaking slightly for the last 5 years since 1995.
As usual, he sought treatment from the best doctors in the region. Money spent. He could no longer control his right hand and hence could not write. The doctor advised him to learn writing using left hand. He declined the suggestion.
It was until 1999 that he was introduced to a Chinese physian from China at Tong Shin Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, that saw improvement of his health. For a year, he travelled weekly to Kuala Lumpur to receive massage and acupunture treatment from the doctor before the latter went back to China.
In the process, he began to realise that to overcome his illness, he has to help himself via alternative medication.
He began to learn Chi-Neng Chi Gung in 2000, which became the turning point in his life. His health imrpoved further and subsequently he decided to let go all modern medicine.
He and his wife stayed us in Kepong last three days (19-22 June 2010), to attend their son-in-law’s graduation ceremony at PWTC. He is now a new man. His slanting head is no longer obvious and his hand does not shake any more. He can now write again with his right hand.
Cheerful and full of conficence, he attributes his health improvement to massage, acupunture and Chi-Gung.
The lesson to be learned is “health is our responsibility”. We simply have to help ourselves to reclaim good health. If there is anything we can learn from him, it is his determination to help himself.

Diary 99: Leg Pain Among Elders
Leg pain among elders seems to be a common sight now.
It is observed that many elders above 60 years old are facing this problem.
They have to walk slowly as their physical health is deteriorating.
I met this Mr S a few days ago. He saw me running to the car to get something for him.
“Wah! You (aged 56) can still run. At the age of 61, I have to walk slowly to avoid further complication”.
I must say that enjoying good health is part of my life. With my present way of life, the possibility of me having leg pain later is minimal.
The reason is very simple. It one continues to embark on the healthy diet of 20% acidic food and 80% alkaline food, one’s body will not become acidic. Consequently, one will not have leg pain due to body’s acidity.
Come and join us in choosing healthy diet of 20% acidic food and 80% alkaline food.
You too can enjoy good health and keep many diseases at bay.

Diary 98: Retirees Coming Back to FRIM
Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), my work place, celebrated her annual prize giving ceremony on 18 June 2010.
For the first time, about 30 retirees were invited to participate in the grand event. They felt proud coming back to their former work place where many spent more than 30 years of their lives.
I observed that a number of them were not in good health. Taking medicine has become daily things to to.
I took the opportunity to introduce them my health books. A half-price discount was offered.
Some were surprised that I am writing health books.
Well, life is full of surprises here and there.
I hope they will take care of their health by choosing health food.
Best health to all retirees.

Diary 97: Purchasing Health Books for relatives & friends
In the process of promoting my health books, I meet a special category of new friends.
These are the minority who are willing to purchase my books for their relatives and friends.
Normally, I take the opportunity to introduce my books to them during meetings and conferences.
After reading some pages of the books, they find it useful to purchase extra copies for their relatives and friends.
Another attractive reason for their purchase is the discounted price of the books, at only RM15 per copy. It will be a cheap gift for those they love and care.
Yesterday (16 June 2010), Mdm Lor got five books for her relatives and friends.
Today (17 June 2010), Ir Boey Hor Meng purchased a total of 10 books. He will try to get his church to organise a health talk later.
These are the people who value my health books.
They also care about the health of their friends and relatives.

Diary 96: Tackling ageing the natural way
Most women get a little worried about the lines on their face after they reach 40 years of age.
They want a find a quick way to get rid of the lines and slow the signs of ageing.
They want to restore and maintain their youthful look.
A lot of commercial interests are involved in handling women’s ageing.
Among the commercial means of reversing the signs of ageing are cosmestics, botox injections and surgery.
These commercial means can be very expensive, could leave permanent scars and side effects.
Again, I like to encourage you to take health food to fight ageing signs.
People who consume health food daily normally look younger and show lesser sign of ageing.
They do not have to apply cosmetics to cover the lines on the face.
This saves their money.

Diary 95: Invited by a Medical Doctor to deliver a talk
I know if is difficult for a medical doctor to invite me to deliver a health talk for the interests of the public.
I met a number of medical doctors while promoting my health books in the past. When I mentioned about the title of the health book, most of them were quick to declare their professions and stated that they knew the contents of my book.
Would you like to have a copy of my health book? I posed this questions to about 10 medical doctors I met. One purchased a copy as he thought the contents are helpful to his patients.
How about organising a health talk for your patients? No one took up the offer.
It was only until May 2010 when I received an email from this medical doctor, Dr Oo Sween Khoon from Seremban. He invited me to deliver the health talk on “Living healthily without medicine” at the Seremban Sudhamma Buddhist Society.
The talk was successfully organised in the evening of 12 June 2010. Before that talk, I openly thanked Dr Oo for his courage to invite me to deliver the talk. Those attending the talk revealed that they have benefits from it.
After all, who does not want to live healthily without medicine!
So, if you wish to organise a health talk for your organisation, just contact me. Let’s do something good together for the public.

Diary 94: Your health affects your job
This young graduate called me today (11 June 2010) informing that his health condition may affect his future employment.
He was offered a new job with an international company that is willing to give him a good pay. His monthly basic salary is around RM3,000. With over time and other allowances, he can expect to receive about RM7,000 a month.
The monthly income is important to him as he needs the money to prepare for his wedding which costs between RM15,000 and RM20,000.
The company requires medical check-up. The first medical check up last week showed that his urine is acidic.
The company wants to have another medical check up in mid June. He is getting worried.
I asked the reason for his body’s acidity. He replied that for the past two weeks, he took a lot of fast foods.
He knows the answer. At least for the next two weeks, he needs to avoid the acidic food and start taking alkaline foods and drinks.
He has to be determined to improve his health. Otherwise, he may not be able to enjoy the high income associated with the new job.
The reality is good companies are looking for employees in good health.

Diary 93: Detox and burn fat naturally
Our body is constantly accumulated with toxins from various sources (food, air and water). This long term toxin accumulation leads to an increase level of body acidicity and toxicity.
If the body has a high level of acidicity and toxicity, it will be prone to various illenesses and diseases such as obesity, heart problem, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney failure and even cancer.
There are many health products in the market pursuading consumers to try them, particularly to reduce body weigt.
How effective are these products? It may work for some and not others.
To be effective, the products’ weight management program often involves a sensible diet and exercise plan.
If such is the case, I would rather encourage you to just focus on the sensible diet and the exercise plan.
What is this so-called sensible diet?
It is none other than the health food that needs to be taken everyday. It will help you to detox, burn fat and hence reduce body weight naturally.

Diary 92: 3rd Edition of Eating for Good Health
Yes, the 3rd edition of my health book Eating for Good Health was successfully published in first week of June 2010.
The publication of this book is to raise awareness on how your food choices affect your health, your happiness and the future of life on earth as well as the universe.
It helps you make a wise choice in selecting daily foods that will make you healthier and happier.
It shows you how to protect your health against major diseases such as obesity, heart attacks, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer.
This book was written to help others who wish to attain health; it is not meant for making financial gain.
Health food played a major role in lengthening the life of my late my father-in-law experiencing prostate cancer without radiotherapy and chemotherapy from three to 13 years (1996 to 2009).
My own family members enjoy good health as we no longer depend on modern medicine.
It is my sincere hope that you and your family will benefit after reading this book.

Diary 91: Brushing Tooth With Alkaline Soap
It never crossed my mind that we can use a soap to clean our tooth.
I met the owner of enviromental-friendly products on 1 June 2010 in Ipoh. The encounter opened my mind on how to protect ourselves and the environment by using alkaline soap.
Mr Phang explained that most the tooth paste in the market is acidic in nature as chemicals (such as Sodium Monofluorophosphate) are used in manufacturing.
However, the soap he produces is different. It is made from plant-based materials and hence is alkaline in nature thus helps protect our tooth.
That makes sense to me. On the very night, I started using his manufactured soap to brush my tooth. Great, it is more effective even though I did not use any tooth paste for the last 10 years.
I now encourage other family members to use the alkaline soap to brush their tooth too.
Perhaps, you too may like to use alkaline soap to brush your tooth instead of the normal tooth paste.

Diary 90: No organic shop in Kota Baru
I was in Kota Baru, the state capital of Kelantan, from 24-27 May 2010.
One of my intersts is to visit an organic shop.
While most major cities in Malaysia have at least one organic shop, there is none in Kota Baru.
At this age of diseases caused by unhealthy food, the presence of organic shop is an indicator of a city population’s health.
People in Kota Baru cannot expect to have better health when there is no organic shop around.
I encouraged a sundry shop owners to operate organic food corner in the shop.
They are thinking over this new idea.
Hopefully, the next time I visit Kota Baru, orgnic food can be found.

Diary 89: Special Talk by Dr Lai Chiu Nan
This special talk entitled “Living well, dying well” was delivered at the civic centre MBPJ in the evening of 4 June 2010. I drove back alone from Penang before noon and was just on time not to miss this talk.
Dr Lai from USA is the founder of Lapis Lazuli Light Society which has branches in a number of countries, including Malaysia, Singapore and New Zealand.
The sharing session provided additional information on why everyone should think of the issues related to life and death.
She explained to the audience the scientific evidences of life after death.
Scientists in the west have collected thousands of cases on this issue.
Most importantly, she also shared with us how her family members faced and managed death of their parents. Both her parents had actually communicated with family members and friends before and after their passing away althose they were apart.
Many of us are likely to feel very sad when observing the passing away of our loved ones. To Dr Lai, we must prepare to face death and to ensure that our loved ones pass away peacefully.
She further added that every night when we go to sleep, we pass away temporarily before waking up the next morning.
People who live well and will pass away peacefully.
Thanks to Dr Lai and organiser for the enriching evening.
