Diary 88: Full time vegetarian

I was attending a wedding dinner in Kulai (Johore) on 22 May 2010.

Even though some know that I am a vegetarian taking health food, they still asked if I wished to have some chickens and a beer.

I told them I have given up all these.

It was difficult for some to accept that I am now a full time vegetarian. This is especially for relatives who have not met me for the last 30 years.

There is no need to explain furhter to these non-vegetarians.

We just have to respect each other in terms of diet.

There is no reason for me to turn back now to non-health food.

I enjoy pretty good health and am happy to be so for the rest of my life.

I wish my relatives good health too.

May all of us be healthy and well.

Diary 87: Handling Fever the Natural Way

When our son had fever for six-days last week (10-16 May 2010), my wife kept a low profile.

If she started telling peoples we handle the nine-year old boy’s fever the natural way, they are likely to raise their eye brows.

Aren’t you aware of H1N1? Yes, we do.

Why don’t you send him to the clinic? There is no need to do so.

Aren’t you worried that his body temperature is so high that it may damage his brain as commonly believed? Yes, we do.

But, we make sure that his body temperature is below 40 degress Celcius by feeding him fruit juice, coconut water and warm water.

We aslo massage his body and legs to reduce the heat to enable him to sleep.

This is the self-healing process.

You have to do it with knowlege, confidence and patience.

It just works.

That is why since birth, this 9-year-old boy only visited the clinic once.

He will grow up a healthy man in the years to come.

This is our best gift to him and society.

Diary 86: Experience in Promoting Health Books

Some friends are wondering how I promote my three health books.

Did you place them in major book stores?

No, I just place my books at selected book store (FRIM’s book store) and a few organic shops.

Even for organic shops, one has to be selective.

Those in business know that distributing the books may be simple but collecting payment is not easy. Even in organic shops, the owners are also delaying payment.
Did you ask friends to promote the books?

I tried before but this is no different from those in business. Do not expect them to pay without reminding after passing the books to them. In fact, I never remind them.

I came to realize that self-promotion is best for my health books. The personal promotion via health talks and expplanation often touches the hearts of those encountered.

Simply, the books are written to help them, not to make their money.

In any case, unless the books written is categorised as “popular” such as reference books, do not expect to make money in Malaysia.

That is the reason why we do not find many professionals writing health books in Malaysia.

Diary 85: Preparing Third Edition of Health Book

I am spending time preparing the third edition of Eating for Good Health now.

There are two reasons for this preparation. In the first place, I donated 50 books to the national library to support the current “reading campaign” organised by the government.

Secondly, I gave away 200 copies of the book to my colleagues in FRIM. Hopefully, this will improve their health after reading the book.

There is a need to design a new book cover. I get assistance from a new colleague, Adzrul Haqiemy Sharif Katulah. In turns, he sought assistance from his designer friend, Mohd Rafie Anuar.

All I can say is publication of this book requires the support of many friends, new and old.

Since its publication is to help others to attain, maintain and reclaim health, I have been receiving assistance from friends who do not expect any return. I normaly give them copies of the book once published.

So far, everyone is happy with this arrangement.

Welcome to the world of health and happiness.

Diary 84: My Son’s Fever

While I was away in Sabah from 10-13 May 2010, my nine-year old son was down with fever. It was too far for me to do anything except advising my wife to be patient.

As usual, my wife did not send him to the clinic. She just let him resting at home. No schooling. Health is too important in life. Give him fresh fruit juice, coconut water and warm water to cool down his body temperature. My wife massaged him before and after work. I am grateful to her for doing all these.

By the time I was back home at mid night on 13 May 2010, his fever did not show sign of significant recovery. My wife was too tired. My mother-in-law who is staying with us got worried.

Did his fever cause by virus? The elder began to be doubtful about our approach of handling fever.

By 16 May 2010, his body temperature fluctuated between 37 and 39.5 degree Celcius. The elder suggested that we should send him to the clinic.

My wife discussed the suggestion with me. I told her our son would be OK soon. He is not brought up like other children who take unhealthy foods much of the time. Afterall, having fever is part of the process of growing up. We should not lose confidence when handling children’s fever. She was reminded of our daughter who experienced 23 days of fever where her body temperature also flectuated between 37 and 39.5 degree Celcius some years ago. She passed the test of not taking any medicine.

This morning (17 May 2010), our son woke up as usual and went to school. He did not want to miss the Teachers’ Day celebration. He was OK after returning home in the afternoon. We are keeping a close watch on him as we do not want the fever to recur.

Diary 83: Talks in Tawau

Two health talks organised by Maha Bodi Society were held in the evening in Tawau (Sabah) on 10 and 11 May 2010. This was done in conjuction to my visit to Tawau to attend a national conference on agrobiodiversity.

I am grateful for the society for organising such talks entitled “Living healthily without medicine” and “Cancer: prevention & treatment”. The talks in Mandarin were well received by the public as about 50% of the participants were non-members.

It was an enriching interaction for me and the participants. We exchanged views on different types of treatment for various diseases.

One issue arising from the talk is the difficulty in obtaining organic vegetables.
I advised them to frow their own vegetables. This was what my family did in 1996 when there was hardly any organic shop in Malaysia.

Those attending the talks were also keen to have my health book in the Chinese language. In fact, they requested me to send 70 copies of the books once the second edition is ready.

Looks like I have to spend some time preparing the health book in Chinese soonest.

One of the attendees, Mr Liu Sin, the Executive Director of QL Plantation Sdn Bhd, was kind to give me some edible natural sea weed by personally sending it to the hotel I was staying. That touched my heart.

Diary 82- Cancer in the US

Report by Reuters (in the Borneo Post 7 May 2010) is important as many countries are following the health path taken by the Americans.

Cancer is the No. 2 killers of Americans, after heart disease.

As many as two-thirds of cancer cases are caused by lifestyle choices like smoking, poor diet and lack of exercise.

Other causes of cancer: pollution, radon from the soil and medical imaging scans.

More causes: obesity, alcohol, infections, hormones and sunlight.

With nearly 80,000 chemicals on the market in the US, many of which are used by millions of Americans in their daily lives and are un- or understudied and largely unregulated, exposure to potential environmental carcinogens is widespread.

What is the above message?

Briefly, the true burden of environmentally induced cancer may be grossly underestimated.

Diary 81- ‘New’ Immune-Boosting Therapy for Prostate Cancer

The followings are reported in The Star 1 May 2020 entitled “FDA approves immune-boosting therapy for prostate cancer” (page W50).

The treatment called Provenge is designed for use by men in the advanced stages of prostate cancer, whose illness has spread to other parts of the body and is resistant to standard hormone treatment.

It involves extracting a patient’s immune cells from his blood in a process known as leukapharesis.

To boost the patient’s response against cancer, the immune cells are exposed to a protein found in body of prostate cancers before being reintroduced intravenously to the patient’s body.

The procedure stimulates a patient’s own immune system to respond against the cancer.
The effectiveness of Provenge was studied in 512 patients with metastatic prostate cancer in a random, double-blind trial and showed an increase in overall survival of 4.1 months.

Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer among men in the United States, behind skin cander.

In 2009, there were 192,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed in the United States, and about 27,000 men died from the disease.

Food for thought:
1. The ‘new’ therapy may be able to lengthen the life of cancer patient for some time.
2. The treatment is unlikely to be cheap and affordable to the general public.
3. Do not wait till you have cancer, and then try all ways to treat it.
4. Save your money and your life, prevent prostate cancer to occur.

Diary 80- The Painkillers

We take painkiller medicine at some stage of our life.

Our parents and we buy these painkillers over the counter in shops, medical halls and pharmacies. The clinics and hospitals also provide painkiller medicine to patients.

These painkiller medicines are effective to relieve pain such as headache, muscle or joint pains. They are used to overcome pain caused by inflammation, arthritis, injury and even cancer.

However, we rarely ask whether there is any side effect when using painkiller medicines.

Now, we need at least to know as the use of painkiller medicine affects our life and happiness in the long run.

Painkillers such as narcotics or morphine are additive and deadly.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin can help ease the inflammation that causes arthritis pain or headache but have side effects.

Aspirin can cause deadly bleeding; related drugs called COX-2 inhibitors sometimes cause heart problems.

Acetaminophen, also known as paracetamol, can damage the liver.

Painkiller medicine may be used wisely when necessary. In the mean time, we need to find out the source of the pain.

If the headache is related to work stress or pressure, the use of painkiller medicines may not be effective in the long run.

Avoid the use of painkillers, if possible.
