This is the story of my colleague’s uncle, Mr Z.
Z retired two years ago with pretty good health condition.
To fulfil health insurance’s requirement, he went for a full medical check out recently.
The result: he was diagnosed with kidney cancer.
How could this happen?
Z takes care of his daily diet, exercises regularly and hardly visit the clinic for many years.
While many people do the above, but they may not be taking healthy food.
That is why even vegetarians may be diagnosed with many modern diseases.
Make sure you too take the right food to maintain health and to keep diseases at bay.
There is unlikely to be sudden sickness after retirement.

Diary 315: Drown in the world of advertisement
Most of us read newspaper or watch the media every day.
One of the most important things about the advertisements in the media is the recommendations on all types of nice and tasty food.
There are news and coverage on where to find these nice foods all over Malaysia, including the remote rural areas. For example, there are 2 local TV program called nice eating.
Enjoy eating is part of Malaysian life.
Have you also observed another phenomenon?
More and more peoples in Malaysia are also having health problems these days.
Then, there is a simultaneous round of advertisement on food supplements in the media.
The health problems remain.
The public is confused. Many peoples in the developed world are also confused.
If you are also confused, you may like to read my health books, especially Eating for Good Health and Makanan Sihat Sebagai Ubat. There are available in my health blog http://drlimhinfui.blogspot.com for FREE READING.

Diary 314: Rare earth plant project in Malaysia
The rare earth plant project operated by Lynas Corporation Ltd has been established in Gebeng, an industrial site near Kuantan, the capital city of the state of Pahang, Malaysia.
The company was granted a manufacturing license in January 2008 to produce “rare earth oxides and carbonates”.
The subsidiary of the Australia-listed Lynas Corp Ltd has since proceeded to build its plant at Gebeng. It was reported that all the construction was monitored by Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) and the Department of Environment.
International Trade and Industry Minister said that both authorities are satisfied that the company has met all health and safety requirments and standards required.
Since January 2011, there is increasing concern over the safety of the project, especially the health, safety and environmental aspects.
The public now airs their concern through various channels. One of which is Save Malaysia and Stop Lynas movement.
It wants the project “to stop now for the sake of present generations and as well as that of our children’s”.
The Pahang Bar Committee offers its legal support to protesters. Malaysian Bar president urged the Government to value the environment as much as investment.
An independent panel is being established to examine the health and safety issues.
========(Source: The Star 23 April 2011) =================================
Irrespective of the outcome of the report on the health and safety of the plant’s operation, the need to for Malaysia to scrap the project is beyond doubt.
The public’s fear of the negative impacts on safety and health of the residents cannot be overcome with a professional report and reassurance.
We have to learn from world history that no one can assure a 100% safety and health for our beloved Malaysians. Technical errors, human negligence and environmental changes can bring adverse impacts.
Malaysia does not need the economic gain from this form of foreign investment. We can always generate income from other froms of investments, definitely not this one.
Negotiate with Lynas Corporation Ltd, compensate it and let it leaves Malaysia with honour and respect. We hope Lynas Corporation Ltd can understand our feeling and respond positively to this humanistic request.

Diary 313: PVC and our health
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a difficult plastic to recycle and it contaminates other plastics in the recycling process.
Most important, the production and burning of PVC products generates dioxins and furans.
Thus plastic commonly used in packaging and household products is a major cause of dioxin formation in open burning and garbage incinerators.
Many local authorities in Europe have PVC-free policies for municipal buildings, pipes, wallpaper, flooring, windows and packaging.
Avoid using PVC products in daily life.

Diary 312: Mercury and our health
You may like to eat fish.
Is there any mercury in the fish?
When inorganic mercury spreads out in the water, it is transformed to methylated mercury in the bottom of sediments.
Methylated mercury easily accumulates in living organisms and concentrates through the food change, particularly via fish.
Beware, methylated mercury causes chronic damage to brain.
Mercury is used in batteries, switches/housing and printing boards.
If you still like to eat fish, make sure it does not contain methylated mercury.

Diary 311: Lead and our health
We need to know something about lead as it has negative impacts on our health.
Lead can cause damage to the central and peripheral nervous systems, blood system and our kidneys.
It also has serious negative impact on children’s brain development.
How does this occur?
Lead accumulates in the environment and has high toxic effects on all life forms.
For example, consumers electronic constitutes about 40% of lead found in landfills.
The lead content in landfills can leach and contaminated drinking water supplies to our homes.
To protect our health, we too have to take care of the environment.

Diary 310: Diabetics-cancer connection
This is what was reported in The Borneo Post dated 7 March 2011.
Doctors know that diabetics have a higher than normal risk of dying of heart attacks or stroke.
New research findings showed that having diabetes also ups the risk of dying from many cancers and other diseases.
The research, published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), collated and analyzed data from 97 previous studies involving more than 820,000 people worldwide.
It found that being a diabetic hiked the odds of dying from cancer by 25%.
Among the biggest cancer risks for diabetics were liver and pancreatic cancer, colorectal or bowel cancer and lung cancer.
Diabetes is reaching epidemic levels with an estimated 280 million people, or 6.4% of the world’s population suffering from it and numbers predicted to rise further as obesity rates also increase.

Diary 308: Goodness in fruits and vegetables
All nutritionists recommend daily consumption of vegetables and fruits to maintain good heath.
These fruits and vegetables supply a variety of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre and various bioactive substances.
Fruits and vegetables are also good source of dietary fibre. The main fibre-rich foods are wholegrain cereals, legumes, fruits and vegetables.
Many of the chemicals in plants (phytochemicals) are not traditionally recognised as nutrients.
However, these phytochemicals are biologically active and have been shown to be capable of reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as heart diseases, diabetes and hypertension.
Phytochemicals help prevent and interrupt the development of cancer.
Now, the question is “does your daily diet consists of fruits and vegetables?”

Diary 307: Removing gall stones naturally
This may be of your interest.
• For the first five days, drink at least four glasses of apple juice every day. Or eat four or five apples, whichever you prefer. Apple juice softens the gallstones. During the five days, eat normally.
• On the sixth day, take no dinner.
• At 6 pm, take a teaspoon of Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate) with a glass of warm water.
• At 8 pm, repeat the same. Epsom salt or magnesium sulphate opens the gallbladder ducts.
• At 10 pm, take half cup olive oil (or sesame oil) with half cup fresh lemon juice. Mix it well and drink it. The oil lubricates the stones to ease their passage.
