Diary 339: Eye care in Malaysia

“Based on (audit company GfK) statistics, there are about 900,000 contact lens wearers in Malaysia.”

There are currently 881 registered optometrists and 560 opticians permitted to prescribe and dispense contact lens.

The issue: Many opticians are prescribing contact lenes even though they do not receive adequate training.

Ideally, opticians wishing to prescribe and dispense contact lenses should obtain a bachelor’s degree in optometry.

Tertiary training includes basic and applied sciences such as microbiology, physiology, ocular pathology, ocular anatomy and biochemistry.

Those wearing contact lenses should take note of the above.

(Source: 4 June 2011, The Star).

Your eye care affects your health.

Better still, do not wear contact lenses.

Why?

Just observe the extent of optometrists and opticians.

Many of them just wear glasses, not contact lenses.
