Diary 328: Bitter gourd for diabetics

Bitter gourd is a melon that is bitter.

Most young people do not like bitter gourd because of the taste.

But, it has medicinal value, especially for diabetics.

Bitter gourd contains a hypoglycaemic compound (a plant insulin) that is highly beneficial in lowering sugar levels in blood and urine.

Bitter gourd juice has been shown to significantly improve glucose tolerance without increasing blood insulin levels.

Diary 327: Health of scientists

I attended this scientific symposium in Kuching in April 2011.

As usual, I passed some health books around.

Some donated to the next printing.

A few young scientists inquired about healthy eating.

I asked them to list down the types of food they take in the morning, afternoon and evening.

All of them are taking foods which are mainly acidic in nature.

They are likely to face health problems at the later stage of their life.

Some suggestions were made to improve their health.

If you wish to improve your health and enk=joy a healthy living, kindly read my health books. They are free for reading in this blog.

Diary 326: Prof Dato Dr A

During a recent 2011 symposium, he revealed that he is struggling with his poor health.

After his presentation, I passed him a copy of my health book.

In return, he donated to the next printing of the book.

He did not stay on for the rest of the sessions in the symposium.

After he left, I was told that he has prostate cancer and it is at a critical stage now.

I later sent him a SMS message suggesting him to read my book carefully as it could help.

I hope this helps as cancer is not easy to handle.

But, all hope is not lost. If one handles it well, one’s life could be lengthened.
It is a pity that many well-known professors such as Dr A have to suffer after retirement simply they did not take care of their diet and health when they were young.

Raising healthy eating habit among our population is important.

Being a rich nation is only meaningful when its people are in good health.

Diary 325: A victim of modern food

The couple migrated to England for employment in the 1970s.

They adopted the west habit of eating.

In 2010, he was diagnosed with cancer.

He went for conventional treatment, from chemotherapy to radiotherapy.

The doctors in UK told him and medicine prescribed is just to prevent the cancer cells from spreading.

He came back to Malaysia and received treatment.

He was giving up.

His elder brother scolded him as he is still young, below 60.

I shared with them the wonder of health food for cancer patients.

I shared with them how health food helps to ‘cure’ cancer in Korea and Japan.

We need to know the food taken. Otherwise, the next cancer victim could be one of us.

Diary 324: Control sale of junk food in school canteens

The Ministry of Health Malaysia is making this bold and wise decision in mid-April 2011.

The sale of junk food at school canteens is now reduced and controlled.

The problem of obesity among students is worrying. Reduction in junk food consumption may help to reduce obesity among students.

For long term solution to obesity, raising awareness is most important.

Awareness begins at home, not at school.

If the parents are aware of junk food, it is easier for children to reduce its consumption.

Awareness is the first step in rejecting and reducing junk food.

If there is no demand, the supply will dwindle.

Diary 323: Waiting at the hospital

My 30+ year-old colleague went to a public hospital last week.

He had to wait for 3 hours before seeing the medical officer.

It was a long wait for him.

He had little choice.

The medical cost at the private hospital is too high. He could not afford.

When you cannot afford private medication, you have to be patient waiting for treatment at the public hospital.

If you want to avoid waiting at the hospital, it is best to maintain good health.

In such a situation, you do not have to wait at the hospital, be it public or private.

Diary 322: Menjaga Kesihatan Hati

• 1/2 gelas air suam +jus 1 biji lemon + 1 sudu besar molasses + 1 sudu the minyak zaiton + sedikit Crayenne pepper
• Amalkan setiap pagi selama 10 hari
• Sebelum makan pagi

Nota: molasses, minyak zaiton, Crayenne pepper boleh diperolehi dari kedai organik berhampiran. Sebaik-baiknya resipi ini diamalkan 1 jam sebelum makan pagi.

Jagalah hati kita!

Diary 321: Meatless Monday

In Malaysia, the Meatless Monday campaign is making some inroads in the local scene.
Meatless Monday is an international campaign that encourages people to drop meat from their plates on Mondays.
Their goal is to help you reduce your meat consumption by 15% in order to improve your personal health and the health of the planet.
Some organisations have responded to this campaign.
Pearl International Hotel Kuala Lumpur is one of them.
What is its plan?
1. The hotel will have a meatless menu on Mondays at the hotel staff cafeteria.
2. For hotel guest, a specially designed meatless set lunch is available.
3. There will be a meatless corner during buffer promotions in the hotel on weekends.
You too can enjoy the life of meatless Mondays.
For me, everyday is meatless. It is such a wonderful lifestyle.
I am at peace with all life forms in the universe.
Some organisations have responded to this campaign.
Subsequently, I sent an e-mail to a manager in Pearl International Hotel Kuala Lumpur expressing my interest to work with them on promoting meatless meals. Unfortunately, there is no reply after a month.

Diary 320: Taking syabu to lose body weight

In Malaysia, it was reported that some women in Terengganu were taking drug (especially syabu) to lose weight (Sunday Star 17 April 2011).

Syabu (methamphetamine) or pil kuda is believed to help women control their eating habits and reduce body weight.

A consultant plastic surgeon cautioned that those taking drug to shed a few kilograms could suffer fatigue, depression and increased blood pressure.

It could also lead to addiction.

Short-term adverse effects include seizures, palpitations, increased blood pressure and skin reaction.

Long-term adverse effects include psychosis and violent behaviour.

It is better to shake off the extra kilogram naturally, via exercise and taking low-protein food.

Diary 319: Stroke now strikes the young

The below news was published in page N17 of The Star 28 March 2011.

KUALA LUMPUR: About 15% of 480 stroke patients last year were below the age of 50, said University Malaya Medical Centre director Prof Datuk Dr Ikram Shah Ismail.

“This means that young people are not spared if they do not adopt a healthy lifestyle.”

This phenomenon is worrying because stroke can strike suddenly and affect the quality of life for patients,” he said at a lunch held for over 150 young stroke patients here yesterday.

Dr Ikram Shah said peer support group events were vital to lift the spirits of stroke patients.

My response to the above: It is better if the media could carry more news on what causes stroke and how a change to healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of having stroke.

Diary 318: The value of health

A reporter asked the 37-year-old Owen Yap, a TV newscaster on health matters (Sunday Metro, M2, the Star 27 March 2011).

Yap believes health is everything.

“Without it, there will be nothing – no fame or money”.

My responses to the interview are as below.

1. Owen Yap has realised the importance of health.

2. He is discipline in getting about 8 hours of sleep a day. This is an excellent practice.

3. From the explanations given on the kinds of food he likes, he needs to learn about the nature of food taken to maintain good health. Best wishes to Owen Yap.

If he does not take care of his food, all the fame he enjoys at the moment may not help maintain good health in the long run.

Diary 317: Hari Organik at SS2

26 March 2011 was the Organic Day organised by CETDEM.

Earlier, Ms Tan of CETDEM approached me and I agreed to become a volunteer on that day.

Later, she asked if I was ready to give a health talk.

I went there at 8am and helped to promote my health books and CETDEM’s publications.

It was a good opportunity for me to interact with the public on healthy eating habits. I gave away a recorded TV propram on “Food to cure cancer” to two cancer patients.

At noon time, together with Mr Omarali Abdul Rahim, my colleague at FRIM, we delivered a health talk on “Reducing body weight effectively”. I shared my view on shedding extra kgs in the long run. Mr Omarali shared his experience of reducing 23 kgs within 3 months.

Hari Organik is a good initiative deserves my support. Yours too.
