The views of Dr Robaayah Zambahari (senior consultant cardiologist and CEO of Institut Jantung Negara).
The Malaysian National Cardiovascular Database NCVD) (data contributed by 14 centres and hospitals) 2007 and 2008 found the average age of patient to be 59 years old.
This database also showed that amongst patients admitted for acute coronary syndrome, there was a high prevalence of established cardiovascular risk factors:
33-34% were active smokers
31-35% had dyslipidaemia (i.e. the condition of having too high or too low lipid (fat) levels in the bloodstream)
56-63% had high blood pressure
39-40% had diabetes.
In summary, causes of heart disease: high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and smoking.
